Summary
When she takes the first cup of warm cider at the harvest party from a boy a year ahead of her at school named Daniel, she wrinkles her nose a bit at the first sip. It has a sort of burn to it, and she rubs her tongue against the roof of her mouth, feeling it out. She takes a second sip, trying to determine what it is, but against sweet apple and spices, it’s hard to pick it out.
“What’s in this?” She asks him, as he hands two other kids cups of the same stuff.
“That’s some special juice,” he says with a wink. The emphasis is clearly supposed to mean something to her, but she can’t fathom what it might be beyond the simple fact that it’s hot apple juice with stuff in it. She thinks she heard someone call in nulled, but that doesn’t mean anything to her, and Joel isn’t here to explain it.

Summary
She thinks it’s a joke at first when she finds out that Joel’s a patroller, too. She’s a veteran, so it was a simple thing for her to be assigned to the work as well, but the idea of gentle, loving Joel with a gun in hand, fighting and killing, is almost laughably absurd.
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who spends hours on the porch with his daughter patiently teaching her guitar and think “yes, he’s good in a fight.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who regularly scoops up his fussy nephew and soothes him with an experienced parent’s deftness and think “yes, he’ll absolutely kill without hesitation.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who lets his teenager manhandle him to steal his food right off his plate because it makes her laugh and think “yes, he’s ruthless enough to take out a threat.”
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at Joel Miller and think he’d be a good patroller, and day by day, she worries about it more and more.

Summary
The butterfly leads him on a path that makes him smile, weaving around trees and clambering up rocks the way he did when Sarah was small enough that some of her climbs left her stranded. It’s utterly senseless, the same route Sarah would pick when he wasn’t chiding her to stay on the trails. The butterfly never leaves his sight, like it’s waiting for him to catch up, and he can almost hear Sarah calling “C’mon slowpoke!” through the trees as he follows the little yellow dot. His throat feels tight, but he feels lighter than he has in years, playing this stupid game.
He snorts when the butterfly disappears around a tree. Sarah used to love darting around trees to jump out at him, so he jogs to catch up, and in his stupid whimsy, swings himself around-
And finds himself face to face with a small teenager with a gun.

Summary
“983,” the guard calls, clanging a baton on the bars of the cell. He doesn’t bother to look up, very busy tracing out the state of Texas in the lines on the wall. He’s found four of them so far. He’s trying for a fifth. “New buddy.”
He does exhale through his nose at that, slightly amused to find out what new victim they’re offering him this time. He doesn’t have a great reputation with his “buddies,” the fuckers attached by handcuff to their cellmates to make it harder to escape, a standard practice in FEDRA prison. He’s gone through four now, each and every one of them trying to pull a power play by picking a fight.
It hadn’t gone well for any one of them.
“Try not to kill this one too quickly,” the guard says, and there’s a certain amount of anticipatory glee in the man’s voice that sets off a quiet alarm in his head.
He lifts his head, needing to see what makes this new inmate so special.
And looks right at a kid who can’t be older than 14, absolutely swamped by a prison outfit meant for someone about three sizes larger.
A girl, in the middle of a men’s prison.
