“It seems you two are my only friends.” Yuji whined, chirping loud enough to purposefully gain the larger mer’s attention. As if they understood his words, the small fish swam closer to Yuji, hovering around his hands with the larger of the two rising just above his face.
He’d raise his voice after that, knocking back his head, so his sounds would travel back into the cave.
“The only ones I can talk to.”
Still nothing. Perhaps he could be just a bit louder.
“The only ones who care—”
“What are you going on about?”
❤ Yuji finally realizes that he and Sukuna have been courting for quite some time.

“What are you doing in my domain?” Sukuna had crossed his arms, hovering over the smaller merman while his tentacles spread out behind him.
“I’m sorry!” The merman shot his hands up, flailing them around in the water as if it would assist in his apology. “I was just passing through, and I saw you! And, and I guess… I sort of spaced out. Um…”
Spaced out? For a handful of hours?

“So?” Satoru grabbed one of the skewers in front of him, placing the burning hot chicken between his teeth and pulling without an ounce of regret. “How’s it going with the Kraken?”
Suguru slid the menu Satoru left out toward him, skimming its contents before tapping on the item that caught his interest. “I’m thinking we should order some fried calamari while we’re here.”
“That bad, huh?”
❤ Satoru and Suguru work for a somewhat dubious (but respectable) marine research center that specializes in housing and observing the rarest creatures one can find. Two merfolk, nicknamed Yuji and Sukuna by staff, have been brought in to the facility under their care, and neither are transitioning well to their new home in captivity. It isn't until a security breach occurs after hours that the researchers understand why.

Facing shame, humiliation and the threat of potential expulsion from university as a result of the scandal Yuuji is desperate to protect his grandfather's frail health when the faculty demands to involve his family.
