“You always catch me,” Jaeyun says.
And Heeseung, foolish, aching, almost believed he’s allowed to. He smiled then, soft. “You always fall.”
And then Jaeyun looked at him, the way he does that makes Heeseung’s heart constrict in his chest. His hand touched Heeseung’s wrist, just barely. “Maybe it’s because I know you will.”
In a world where Omegas are protected and cherished, and Betas are meant to serve and never reach, Heeseung makes the mistake of hoping.

“I told myself it would be worth it, because I was promised that one day, I would get to share what was mine, but that day kept slipping further away, pushed back again and again until it stopped feeling real.” His voice finally breaks, roughened by the pain he no longer hides from Jake. “And somewhere along the way, I started to feel empty, like I was holding onto something that wasn’t even there anymore.”
Only then does Heeseung look at Jake, and whatever composure he has left begins to fracture.
“And then I fell in love,” he admits, the words quieter but far more vulnerable. “And suddenly I had a reason to try again, a reason to keep going, because I love you, and somehow you love me too, even when I felt like there wasn’t much left of me to give.”
Heeseung draws in a breath that does little to steady him.
“And then I had to choose. They made me choose.”

Summary
Trudging footsteps and the slam of the freezer door alert them to another presence, and when someone sits down to join them Jake lazily turns his head to say hello and promptly shoves his ice cream so far into his mouth he chokes on it and whites out from brain freeze.
Heeseung's newly lilac hair is messy, his face is bare, his arms are bare, his shorts are riding up his bare thighs and he is going at a strawberry popsicle with the passion and energy one would normally give to, uh, other endeavours, Jake imagines.
Vividly.
He imagines it vividly.

Jake has had a normal crush on Heeseung for the better part of three years. Suddenly, nothing about it feels very normal anymore.
