    Summary

Transmigrating into the stallion novel he hates most is bad enough, but why did it have to be into the body of one of the protagonist's wives? Shen Yuan spends exactly two months dealing with harem intrigues, sullen maids and his husband utterly ignoring him before he decides to go on an extended holiday. Very extended. Surely no one will care if he just forgets about being married and becomes a cultivator, right?

(In which Luo Binghe goes on a quest to bring his errant husband home and Shen Yuan takes him on an adventure instead.)

    Summary

Jim meets his eyes. He looks wrecked. “Starfleet- Starfleet’s sent a message. I can’t be captain of the Enterprise and be with you. So-” His eyes dart away from Spock, flitting over the bed, the walls, the curve of the carpet, as if he can’t look at Spock while he’s breaking the news. “So I’m saying goodbye.”

“Ah,” Spock says, and regulates his breathing.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Quote What is wrong with you?” McCoy snarls. “You’ll apologize for this but not for what you did to Jim? Are all Vulcans hypocrites, or is it just you?”

Spock draws up, as tense as a bowstring. His expression is carefully blank. “Jim told you.”

    - - -

“Yes, he told me!” Uhura yells, having cornered Jim in McCoy’s bedroom and now yanking her shoes off for some reason. “How dare you? Breaking Spock’s heart and then running off to hide in Leonard’s room like a coward? How dare you? How could you do that to him?”

“I didn’t do anything!” Jim yells back, tangled in a blanket, still not fully awake, feeling like he’s caught in the throes of a waking nightmare. “Leave me alone!”

    - - -

“You didn’t do anything?” McCoy hisses. “Jim cried himself to sleep in my room tonight because you decided somehow, in your logical Vulcan mind, that it would be better to rub salt into the wound and leave him hung out to dry right when he needed you the most! How is that not doing anything?”

Spock looks dumbfounded. The expression would be entertaining in any other circumstance, but now his affected confusion makes McCoy see red.

“He sacrificed everything for you, Spock! The least you could do is not lead him on!”

Spock opens his mouth, then closes it. “Doctor. What are you-”

    - - -

“- talking about?” Jim shrieks, jumping over the mattress to keep it between him and Uhura. She’s wielding her heel like a knife, and it’s freaking him out. It looks razor-sharp. Is that even regulation? “I didn’t break up with Spock! He broke up with me!”

“Lies!” Uhura crows. “You had to choose between the ship and Spock! I know what you did!”

“Well, I’m sorry I loved Spock, okay!” Jim yells. “I’d pick him again, and again and again, even if he doesn’t love me back! I don’t know why me giving up the captaincy was such a big deal to him, but it doesn’t matter now anyway!”

    Uhura stills. Stares. “What?”

“I’ve already submitted my resignation! I’m-”

    - - -

“-leaving the ship,” Spock admits. “I will never see Jim again, if that is what he desires.”

McCoy feels like he’s going insane. “What?! No, Jim left his captainship for you!”

“Doctor, you are confused. He chose his captainship over me. He came to me just a few hours ago, to- to say goodbye. There was no alternative for me but to resign.”

“He was saying goodbye to the ship, you idiot!” McCoy screams, and has the cathartic pleasure of seeing Spock go through all five stages of grief before he abruptly pales.

    “You- you mean-”

    - - -

“Yes, that’s what I mean! Spock’s resigned already! Why on earth would he break up with you if you resigned?”

“I don’t know! It made sense at the time!” Jim cries. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure! He finished packing his bags an hour ago. We were going to leave when we return to Earth tomorrow!”

    “Wait, we?”

    - - -

“Yes, we!” McCoy spits, although the previous target of his anger has turned into a heartbroken, idiotic sort-of friend, so he’s just angry at the world now. “Why would I keep serving in Starfleet if Jim resigned?”

“Uhura and I have resigned as well.”

“Of course you did,” McCoy says after a stunned pause. “Of course. Uhura’s too much of a spitfire for you to tell her no.”

    “I did tell her no.”

    “Not well.”

“Well,” Spock shoots back, “if you’ve already resigned, evidently Jim didn’t succeed either.”

“He could never stop me,” McCoy scoffs, and Spock raises an eyebrow sardonically. For a second, it’s like old times. “Where is Uhura, by the way?”

At the same moment, they realize that the pull-out bed beside them is empty. Though her luggage is here, she isn’t.

    They both freeze.

“Wait,” McCoy says with a dawning sense of dread. “If she’s not here…”
