Summary
The rhythmic click clack of the train gliding along the ancient tracks melded with the lightly falling rain and distant rumbles of thunder to create a symphony held together by the willowy wind whooshing by the slightly fogged glass of the sleeper car window. It was dark, only the dim lamp light providing a soft yellowish glow to the small rocking room. The world seemed to sway along with the heartbeat of the long slender mechanical serpent streaking through the mountainside and along the forest’s edge.
Scylla sat primly on the pull down lower bunk bed, neatly prepared by the porter earlier that evening, a delicate wooden box balanced precariously yet securely in her grasp. She gazed down at it with curious sharp eyes. Her thumb gently swept across the top of the ornate object to trace the design carved into the mahogany. Her skin brushed across the indentations, and she narrowed her eyes thoughtfully.
It was beautiful yet, to many, something rather bland. Plain. Nothing of outright appeal or substance. Merely a box with a few etchings along the lid.
She almost smiled to herself at such a ridiculous ignorant notion, dampening the gesture at the last second.

“Because something terrible happened,” Kim said steadily. “Something bad. And we all gave up. And some of us gave up more than others. Some of us – no. You. Jason. Zack. You quit altogether. You bailed on me and Billy. We're all hurting, and we all need each other, and I don't get why you have to be so damn stubborn!”
