Thranduil has many questions. Why? What had Lanthir done to deserve such a fate, at the hands of her child, no less? Had Legolas been possessed, or was it pure evil that ran through his veins and encouraged him to bring forth his mother’s fate? But he could not bring himself to ask. He made an attempt to convince himself that it was because Legolas had made a mistake, a terrible mistake that he would regret for the rest of his unending life. In the child’s face, Thranduil finds no falsehood. No ill will, aside from the urge to survive at any cost. Perhaps it had been a terrible misunderstanding, resulting in the worst possible outcome.But, Thranduil thinks to himself grimly, he knows the true reason he does not ask. He does not ask because he cannot bear to hear the answer, the confirmation of the damning blood that runs through this child’s veins. Cannot bear to lose this last small piece of Lanthir along with all he has lost today.
