It’s odd that he’s short of breath by the time they reach the top of the staircase leading to Kalim’s room. He closes his lips tightly to hide the fact. Out of pure muscle memory, Jamil reaches for the bronze handle and opens the heavy, wooden door. He slowly trails after Kalim’s light footsteps as they enter his room. On a clear night like tonight, Kalim’s room is illuminated by the moon and dressed in starlight. It’s too bright, too serene. Barely past the doorway, Jamil stares at the graceful arch of Kalim’s back as he stretches and sighs happily over a day well spent. It sends him into an unwilling daze and he feels sick with dread.
Jamil quietly closes the door behind him and immediately crouches down, the last of his proud defenses collapsing.
“…Jamil?”

Taking place shortly after the events in Chapter 4, Kalim and Jamil begin to feel the shift in their relationship as their days go on. For Kalim, quiet mornings are a reminder that his childhood friend is no longer a part of his day-to-day routine. While a part of him didn’t want to further burden Jamil, another part of him felt like who he thought was his closest companion had started to slip away like sand through his fingers.
