It’s odd that he’s short of breath by the time they reach the top of the staircase leading to Kalim’s room. He closes his lips tightly to hide the fact. Out of pure muscle memory, Jamil reaches for the bronze handle and opens the heavy, wooden door. He slowly trails after Kalim’s light footsteps as they enter his room. On a clear night like tonight, Kalim’s room is illuminated by the moon and dressed in starlight. It’s too bright, too serene. Barely past the doorway, Jamil stares at the graceful arch of Kalim’s back as he stretches and sighs happily over a day well spent. It sends him into an unwilling daze and he feels sick with dread.
Jamil quietly closes the door behind him and immediately crouches down, the last of his proud defenses collapsing.
“…Jamil?”

Summary
Taking place shortly after the events in Chapter 4, Kalim and Jamil begin to feel the shift in their relationship as their days go on. For Kalim, quiet mornings are a reminder that his childhood friend is no longer a part of his day-to-day routine. While a part of him didn’t want to further burden Jamil, another part of him felt like who he thought was his closest companion had started to slip away like sand through his fingers.

This party, like all parties thrown by the Asim, is a spectacle: drinks and lights and a buffet table that stretches the full length of the banquet hall. Kalim navigates it, as he was born to, with ease and cheer; Jamil walks, as as he was born to, half a step behind. Tastes each drink before Kalim can guzzle it down, positions himself subtly between any displeased eyes and his master, stands ever at the ready for Kalim’s every whim—until finally he can’t take it anymore, and waves his sister to come take over so he can get ten goddamn minutes to himself.
…Ha, what a joke. Not even fifty steps out the hall when footsteps come tap-tap-tapping up behind him, and on an instinct he wishes he could smother, Jamil turns.

“Get down!” Jade grabbed them both and dove to the sea floor, pulling all three of them under the whale skull.
Azul peered out the eye sockets of the whale skull just in time to see a long, sleek creature emerge from the cave. It had narrow jaws filled with teeth as long as Azul’s tentacles, and a snake-like body at least three times longer than the whale skeleton they hid beneath. Spines ran down the length of its back, and gills large enough for all three of them to swim through pumped in the water.
