– Skull Face, 1984Eleven years is a long time for a man to change. By the end of it, he may be unrecognisable to whom he was before.
Venom Snake awakened on February, 1984, a hero.
Big Boss died on February, 1995, a villain.
A decayed shell of his former self.(MGSV promised the story of Big Boss’ downfall. The trailers were set in a way that made it seem that we would see how the greatest hero of the 20th century became the deplorable man we face in the original two games. We got this, in a sense, with Naked Snake, and how he allowed Venom Snake to be manipulated into becoming his Phantom. However, this seems to have made Venom into a sympathetic figure - an unsung hero who was trapped in an unwinnable situation. This may have been true when he awakened, but the Big Boss we meet in 1995 is a very different man than the one we played as in 1984. This fic aims to bridge the gap between these two men - to see how a hero might fall - to see how a snake might decay.)

Summary
Snake took a drag, a hissing inhale of air into battered lungs, and blew the smoke into Raiden’s face, all the while keeping the cigarette clamped firmly between his teeth. The smoke stung, made Raiden’s eyes burn and water – but he still kept on staring, never once looked away from Snake’s furious, cloudy eyes.
The mission is done. Ocelot is dead. And Snake finds himself spiralling with this undeniable comfirmation that truly, he will never again do what he was once tailor-made for. His body is failing, and he feels powerless.
Luckily, there is someone else out there who has not felt like any aspect of his life was truly his to control for a while now. Someone who understands the angry desperation, and the need to let it out.
