Summary
He crossed to Adaine, gripped her by the front of her top, slapped her sharply across the face, saying, “Stop that idiotic crying, would—” Then he cut himself off, frowning, and inspected his palm.
Aelwyn held her breath.
“Acid Splash,” he said, and he sounded derisive, and Aelwyn didn’t think she’d be able to breathe even if she wanted to—but then he shook his head, and she realized the derision was directed towards her sister, not her. “It’s only a cantrip, Adaine, for Galicaea’s sake! Now stop crying!”
She hadn’t, but she had at least stopped screaming. She had her hands pressed hard into her eyes and she was trembling, but she was silent.

Summary
Fabian resisted the urge to roll his eyes. The Captain had raised him since toddler hood, yes, but that didn't mean he told Fabian anything. Most of the time Fabian was treated like just another crew member. Hells, it seemed the only thing he got special treatment for was personalized combat training which he was grateful for, of course, but never exactly gave way to idle chatter.
***
When Fabian was a toddler he was kidnapped by Captain James Whitclaw with the sole purpose of raising him into a man who could kill Bill Seacaster.
A dozen years later, Captain Whitclaw kidnaps a teenage oracle for bounty. Fabian and her become friends and Fabian starts to think maybe there could be a life from him away from Whitclaw and his crew.

Summary
Aelwyn pointed her fork at her and scrunched her nose. “The Seacaster boy? Really, Adaine, I can’t imagine you tumbling around with those martial classes,” she said in a tone that said she absolutely could imagine Adaine in that situation. “I really don’t understand how you can be so entertained by him. He’s dreadfully obtuse.”
Adaine clenched her hand into a fist and debated how long she would be grounded for if she stabbed her sister. “He’s––” Kind, wonderful, brave, awesome. Arianwen leveled a heavy look at her. This was a test, then. “Useful. Nicer than you anyway. We study together.”
The jab meant nothing, no one in her family had ever been nice, as far as Adaine knew. But Mother’s lip twitched, not into a smile, never a smile for Adaine, but pleased enough for Adaine to know she passed.
