A place where the kids skinny dip in the lake in summer, where crimes aren’t taken too seriously if they’re minor. You get a couple of passes from the Chief, but never three. It’s a town where everyone knows everyone and gossip is a local commodity. There’s not much to fear in a small town like Hawkins. Mundane worries, every day anxieties that melt away come weekends. Things gone missing, but they usually turn up sooner or later.
It's quiet here.
Trusting.
Isolated.

It makes Eddie feel warm in the way that polite boys always do, and even though he can hear a future version of himself cussing him out, he holds out his lighter to Steve—he’s not sure why, but he can picture him clearly, lying in a modest twin bed, walls plastered with Nocturnal Afterglow posters. One hand under the covers, touching himself shyly as he plays with the flame.
Steve takes it from him, puppy dog eyes blinking frantically in surprise. He looks down at the lighter in his hands like Eddie’s turned water into wine.
“So, Steve,” he says slowly, sampling how the name tastes in his mouth. “Are you really a fan of our music?”
Steve offers himself up as a sacrifice, but Eddie would rather have something else.
