“Not anyone,” he interrupted, knowing it for truth. As much as he loved his fanoa, he was well aware others did too—including the woman standing before him.
She gave him a scathing look, as if his admission was yet another fault in her eyes.

Hiscaron is happy as a Palace Guard. His chief ambitions are - or were - to do his bit to keep the Imperial household safe, to figure out whodunnit before getting to the end of the latest detective novel he's reading, and perhaps one day to be promoted to inner guard. Minimum drama, minimum fuss, maximum standing about with well-oiled muscles on display in front of potential paramours.
The Emperor's new secretary is not cooperating with this career plan.
(All fics in this series build out from events in Embers - and therefore spoil it - but I've tried to keep them viable as stand-alones too.)
