He hadn't survived this long believing in any of that... native shit. Koomba in the forest, whatever Jake Sully prattled on about.
He'd survived because he damn well chose to. Because even the other "Miles" had known, one day, he might be outmatched. But not defeated.
Even lost in the depths of the forest, shaking and shivering, hoping she won't notice, he still holds onto that, however weakly. He made it out alive. Barely. And lo' and behold, no Eywa came from him.
It was her, and damn, was he glad to see that pretty face.

Summary
Miles Quaritch and Varang survived the Great Battle of the Spirit Cove, but the war-hungry mated pair's forces were defeated by Eywa, and the Mangkwan people thinned.
