Summary
I am Spock. It was less a thought, more an echo. He clutched it tight all the same. A dealer in kevas and trillium.
At the frayed edges someone laughed. Spock made the echo into a thought into a mantra into a refrain. I am Spock, a dealer in kevas and trillium.
Light in the fog. If he lost the thought it was death. As good as death. A thousand times worse than death.

It took Spock a long time to answer. His jaw tightened, slight but visible, before he relented. "I cannot."
"Race?"
"Swim."
"What?"
*

Riverside, Iowa"I'll cut to the chase. Jim, your aptitude tests are off the charts. Spock, you had a spot in the VSA. And yet you're both here, settling for less than the ordinary life. You could keep doing that, sure, but if you want something better, something special… Enlist in Starfleet."
"Enli—?" Kirk broke into laughter before the word was out. "You guys must be way down on your quota."
"Indeed," said Spock.
***
Spock tends the bar. Jim starts the fights. At the end of the night, they end up in bed. It's not a bad life. It just isn't destiny.
Starfleet Academy is demanding, even for a Vulcan. Joining Roger Korby's secretive project only makes it more so. Still, Spock would be coping fine--if only Jim would speak to him.

Jim had entered as a delicate shade of pink. He was slowly turning crimson. "It's not a normal reaction, Spock. I'm not—itchy or in pain or anything. It's… Different."
***
In order to secure a treaty, Jim took an untested truth serum. Luckily Spock is around to help with the side effects.

Summary
He pushed the feeling of a question into Jim's mind and received nothing insightful in return. That did not mean that he did not appreciate the warm glow of Jim's affection, nor did it mean that he did not take note of the slowly banking heat at the back of Jim's mind; it only meant that these things did not clarify the current situation.
And that—in itself—was what made him realise.
He was being seduced. For nefarious purposes.
***
The Enterprise crew is keeping something from Spock. Something that causes breakfast in bed, giggling, gossiping, and Kirkian flirting.
He would like very much to know what it is.

Summary
"He's—" McCoy was caught up in an agony of indecision; Spock could see the awful sting of it from across the room. To tell or not to tell? What would be the greater betrayal? The decision was a deflation. "He can be cruel, Spock."
***
As Jim rests in Sickbay following their return to their own time, Spock and McCoy discuss his tendency towards pushing members of his crew--and whether he may be pushing too far.

Summary
In his head, Spock called him the Other.
The Other had been kind. Compassionate. Generous. A hundred things—a thousand things—everything that his own Captain Kirk was not.
Spock had never seriously evaluated his captain's character. He had never had a need to. His captain was ruthless, ambitious, and determined, and Spock knew this. These were the qualities that had earned Kirk the captaincy, these were the qualities that would keep him alive throughout it. To expect him to be anything other than he was would be… illogical.
But now Spock had met the Other. Seen everything that Kirk might have been if the world—the universe—had been different. Gentler. And Spock…
Spock wondered.

Summary
Federation scientists were calling it the 'Drift'. The next step in piloting. Not yet intended for Starships, it was being tested for use in shuttles. Two pilots—compatible pilots—would enter the drift together, and use their combined consciousnesses to fly.
The process had been modelled—loosely modelled—on what small amounts of information the scientists had of Vulcan melds.
(The Vulcan High Council, for the record, had not yet commented on the matter.)

Summary
It had been a long time since Spock and Jim had things they did not speak of. Since the day they had first kissed, there had been no secrets between them. It had not been a promise, a pact—nothing so formal. It had only been an understanding. They were forging something that was bigger than both of them, that would encompass both of them. What could there be to hide?
Now, though…
There was much they did not speak of.

Summary
"I understand why you choose not to share details of your experiences," he said, once greetings had been dispensed. "However, I require advice, and there is no other being who can provide it."
A slight exaggeration—in truth, it was only that Spock could not bear to approach another with it—but it only repaid Sa-kuk for telling Jim that their meeting might end the world.
"Ask your question and I will consider my answer."
"Sa-kuk." Spock took a single breath. His throat was tight. "Am I gay?"
"Sa-bath…" His counterpart looked at him for a long moment. He looked exceedingly tired. "I suggest that you procure an intoxicant."
***
Asked by Starfleet Command to undertaken a honeypot mission, Spock has come to a startling conclusion about his sexuality. When he reaches out to his counterpart for advice, he may get more than he bargained for.

Summary
Vulcans do not exaggerate. They do not indulge in metaphor. Therefore, when Spock leans over to Jim and murmurs, for his captain’s ears only, that he is certain he would prefer to be negotiating with Klingons than waiting here, his own ears already aching with the racket of the studio, he means it.
*
The first year of the five-year mission is rapidly drawing to a close, and the admirals want the Federation's most famous command team to provide a commemorative interview.
Someone should have warned them about Spock.

“You’re not still sore about me failing to ask the Companion about its nature, are you?”
“No.” Spock blew out the candle and looked over, face conspicuously blank. “No, Jim. I understand that it was not the time.”
“But you’re sore about something.”

After meeting the Companion, Spock is having concerns.

Summary
For those of the Federation who had not borne witness to a Vulcan in a sulk - that being the majority of them - it might seem difficult to identify. Jim, however, knew the signs far too well. There was a certain defiant tilt to Spock's chin, and a mulishness in his eyes, and a total refusal to let Jim even brush against his fingers on the way past.
Just this once though, Jim would let it go. It wasn't everyday that post-coital bliss was interrupted by the Vulcan ambassador.
***
Jim and Spock have been taking advantage of the winter break to make up for some lost time. Unfortunately, they've forgotten something rather important...

Summary
“Right,” said Jim. If he sounded distracted, it was only because his eyes were fixed on the way Spock’s blush highlighted his cheekbones, how it trailed over his ears and down his neck, how it must travel beneath his uniform and…
Jim felt himself flushing, too. He spat out an excuse - he had no idea what it was, completely incapable of processing it - and fled, because it was becoming dangerously, horrifically clear.
James Kirk had a crush on his professor.
*
He's been dumped by his girlfriend, his roommate keeps bugging him, and he needs credits to finish out the summer semester.
The lecture series on Vulcan poetry he signed up for on a whim might turn out to be Jim's saving grace.

“Should I call Bones?”
“I would prefer that you did not.”
Jim snorted at that - any man would. Spock could be on his deathbed and he’d still decline Bones’ tender mercies. He heaved himself upright, suppressing the urge to wince, and said, “He’ll be here soon anyway. Anything you want to mention before he does?”
“Yes.” Spock, likewise, sat up. “I appear to be under some compulsion to speak the truth.”
*
There are consequences to using untested drugs to save your father's life, and Spock is about to meet them full throttle. Jim can only try and keep his too-honest Vulcan from insulting crew, ambassadors, admirals, and parents.
It's a full-time job.

“I asked if you would be able to explain Halloween to me, sir, since, as a Vulcan, I have had little exposure to it.”
***
A lifelong fan of Halloween, Jim is more than happy to explain the intricacies of the Earth holiday to his first officer.
If only his pesky feelings would stop getting in the way.

Summary
“Would you trust me to take care of you?”
That meaning, too, was clear. If Jim said yes, he was surrendering himself to Spock for the remainder of the night. Letting go of command, letting go of the persona, letting go of the requirement that he be constantly prepared, constantly on alert. The flare of fear in his belly wasn’t unexpected, but he squashed it ruthlessly. He trusted Spock above all else. He wouldn’t do anything to suggest otherwise.
“I would,” he said. “I will.”
Spock shifted and kissed him again, right at the base of his spine. “I know what it is you miss from the Academy, Jim.”
***
Returning early from the strange 'amusement park', Jim struggles once more to relax.

Summary
It is an illogical, improbable - even impossible - thought, but Spock nonetheless entertains it. After all, when all else is eliminated, whatever remains must be the truth, and he has eliminated all other possibilities. The truth, therefore, is that the universe hates him, and chooses to punish him - his sins, his hubris, whatever it is he has done this time - by subjecting him to his father.
***
Ambassador Sarek has a mission for the Enterprise - escort a Vulcan in Pon Farr to the colony, where his wife awaits.
The only problem? That the mission risks triggering Spock's, too.
