Part I would be ideal to read first, but who knows, maybe not? Give it a whirl if you'd like. It is a continuation of a Post Tarsus IV, Pre TOS Era fic. We are getting Jim to the Enterprise (and to Spock) by the end!

The campus remains bustling with life and color, the trees still green with summer, though soon they’ll be peeling away into fiery reds and blazing oranges of autumn.

Jim grins, “When I had a first date in mind, I wasn’t picturing the cafeteria.”
McCoy smacks him on the arm, “Yeah and I didn’t think I’d be seeing you around again, but I guess we both don’t get what we want.”
“That’s child abuse.” Jim whines playfully and the southerner grips his sleeve to pull him away from incoming traffic, “Is not! How old are you?”
“Younger than you.”
“That’s debatable.”Unfortunately he just so happens to become best friends with the grumpiest person on this end of the galaxy.

Kirk's chair scraped against the polished metal floor as he stood abruptly, the sound harsh and jarring in the medical bay's controlled quiet. "I need some air," he said, his voice carefully controlled in a way that fooled absolutely no one present. The words came out too flat, too measured, the kind of tone someone used when they were barely holding themselves together.
He was halfway to the door, moving with the quick, purposeful stride of someone fleeing a disaster, when Spock's voice stopped him.
"Captain."
Kirk turned, and Spock was struck by the raw, desperate hope that flashed across his features — like a man dying of thirst who'd glimpsed what might be water on the horizon. For just a moment, his careful composure cracked entirely, and Spock could see the depths of his pain, his love, his desperate need for some sign that the man he'd bonded with still existed somewhere beneath the surface of amnesia.

Spock moved to this school at the beginning of his junior year. He is upset that the guidance counselor didn’t inform him of his credit situation until now. He could have taken a class this year and already have one credit knocked down.
Mr. Ameen continues, “Our fellow band director has informed me that the marching band keeps continuously losing participants each year. This year they are quite short in the percussion department. He concludes his speech with, “I was wondering if you would be able to help them out and I’ll count it as 2 credits, since there is a physical aspect to marching band.”

Spock leaves all he's ever known after being discharged from the Vulcan Science academy, his parents disapproving and a failure to his community, finding lodging leaves him to an apartment with a new roommate.Two collage dropouts, one apartment, will anything come of this?

"Jim tears his focus away from the unachievable for now, focusing back on the black pavement his feet are resting on. It probably isn't the best idea to be sitting on the side of a busy road in Los Angelas, but he doesn't know exactly what else to do.
So as the lights for different bars begin to turn on, illuminating their street with their neon glow. Jim truly accepts it.
