Jim's post Tarsus IV, Pre TOS era fic! This one started as a way to explore why Jim was willing to chase down Finnegan after his best friend had been speared through the chest. And I think we get a satisfactory answer here! Jim has some teenage space adventures, settles down for some (mostly) good times in a bordello, and then after a traumatic transition back to Earth, begins his time at the Academy. He runs into many of the cast of TOS!

Spock moved to this school at the beginning of his junior year. He is upset that the guidance counselor didn’t inform him of his credit situation until now. He could have taken a class this year and already have one credit knocked down.
Mr. Ameen continues, “Our fellow band director has informed me that the marching band keeps continuously losing participants each year. This year they are quite short in the percussion department. He concludes his speech with, “I was wondering if you would be able to help them out and I’ll count it as 2 credits, since there is a physical aspect to marching band.”

If you told James Kirk when he was starting his first five-year mission as Captain of the Enterprise that, by the time the mission was over, he would marry his Vulcan first officer, he would chuckle. Tell him that the two would end up adopting four children, the two eldest before he and his first officer got together, you might send him into a laughing fit.
Too bad it wasn’t a joke.
