Jim's studying to take the notorious Kobayashi Maru simulation for the second time, when one windy Thursday morning he collides with a tall stranger on the way to campus. After a brief chat, they part ways - seemingly forever, until an intrigued Commander Spock decides to contact the cadet who retook his unbeatable sim. Then he gets invited onto the student radio he's been hearing all about during class. The result? The U.S.S. Enterprise and its crew are over a year into their five-year mission, and despite a rocky start, their captain and first officer have become a command team befitting Starfleet's flagship on the bridge and easy friends off of it. When Jim reveals that he's gone to the effort of learning Vulcan for Spock's sake, Spock decides he must find a way to show Jim how much he appreciates his friendship, and goes to McCoy for advice. The good doctor has just the thing.
HIATUS: I should have added this sooner, but due to serious health issues, my progress on this fic has slowed significantly. My interest hasn't waned, and I continue to work on it when I have the energy, but I have no idea when I'll get the next chapter finished. It WILL be finished, as will this fic, it's just very slow going for the time being, while I go through treatment. Thanks to everyone for your constant patience and support! <3

This is not so much an episode fix-it as an episode break-it, assuming that the Talosians are exactly as dangerous as they seem to be for nearly the entirety of "The Cage". It includes a backwards demi-ace style romance in which Kirk and Spock fall for each other early, but take a long time to negotiate the physical side of their relationship, a lot of Descartes' Evil Genius hand wringing, and a reference to a concept mentioned in Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath's "The Price of the Phoenix", in which the risks to Jim Kirk's sanity and career prospects should he develop significant psi abilities are briefly mentioned. Sadly, it predates, and is therefore not compliant with Disco season 2.
As if anything as trivial as having to completely restructure the way he relates to other intelligent beings would put Kirk down for the count.
A note: Some characters from Discovery appear in this fic, as it was written in the midst of Disco season 2. Canon has since moved in different directions, so their presence no longer is consonant with current Disco canon. Kaiidth.
