    Summary

Perhaps, in another universe, Xie Lian lives happily with the love of his life, with no children, and no bounds. He smiles genuinely, he laughs with joy, and he dreams of the future.

However, in this universe, Xie Lian dreads waking up each morning — he dreams and longs for death. He stares at the body that’s not his own, he holds a child for which he can’t feel any love, and he exists as nothing but Jun Wu’s wife.

Locked away in the Heavenly Palace, forgotten by all, he longs for freedom.

Until one day he finds it — he runs — to the Ghost City, and he tries to gamble his life away in exchange for the Ghost King to save his oldest daughter.

    Summary

To be completely fair, it had been a long time since their last date night– or, at least, since ‘date night’ had meant more than being able to collapse on the couch together with the baby monitor, after the sheer luxury that was a thirty-minute shower. Their little plum blossom was worth all the date nights in every conceivable universe and more, but still… After eight months of the tunnel vision that was first-time parenthood, it was nice to feel like young lovers again.

With their baby daughter at her first sleepover with her uncles, Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are finally getting a much deserved and highly anticipated night off from diaper duty. They both overestimate how well that will go- on /their/ parts, oddly enough.

“We talked about it,” Xie Lian says, hearing the frustration in his voice. “I want to go to the next step.”

“It's okay if you don't—” Hua Cheng started.

“I do! God, I want it so much. I don't want you thinking that I don't. I—I think about it all the time, San Lang.”

Hua Cheng looks pleased, the tops of his cheekbones flushing to match his red shirt, and his thumb strokes the back of Xie Lian's hand.

“What do you think about, gege?”

Xie Lian seeks a lesson in desire. And another. And another.

    Summary

    Homesickness. Bereavement.

The two other supporting themes of the piece.

Xie Lian wasn’t foreign to any of them. He was well acquainted with them both. They had come knocking on his door, that time when his parents passed away, when he lost everything that he had, when he no longer had the will to go on, when the world turned its face to him, when he was shunned, alone and lost in the pouring rain, and the rain had washed away the red of his lips, brown of his hair and gold of his eyes. All that remained was a dull washed out photograph, a shell of himself, still standing in the rain, before the two gravestones he had come to familiarise himself with, clothes soaked wet.

But then someone held an umbrella over him in the pouring rain, waited for as long can be. He lifted him, the broken shards of him cutting right though. He painted his life with colours he could see once again.

Or: A depressed Xie Lian works away his lonesome days quietly at a museum. One day a youth in red shows up with a sketchbook and Xie Lian's life starts moving once again.
