Summary

When Carson Shaw unintentionally takes a job typing letters for an advice columnist in a women's magazine, she is offered a glimpse into the lives of women from all across the country. Although her conservative boss refuses to respond to any problems which might be deemed inappropriate or immoral, Carson cannot help but connect with the readers who have poured out their hearts in hopes of being helped. The work brings some of her own fears to the fore and, with her husband away fighting in the war, she finds herself plagued with doubt over her marriage and her future.
When she secretly replies to some of the forbidden letters, she inadvertently begins a conversation with a fascinating stranger who might just change the course of her whole life...

It was wishful thinking. It had to be the truth. Glinda may not know much but she knew performance, and the more she thought about it the better it fit. Elphaba’s death didn’t make sense. Glinda had seen it with her own eyes and had stupidly believed that was proof it had happened.
Elphaba’s melting shadow had been wearing the hat. Glinda wasn’t sure of the scientification of melting, but surely either all or none of her clothes should have melted. Surely Elphaba herself shouldn’t have melted. Fiyero’s body was missing, and Elphaba’s hat was in her hands.
Glinda stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she realized she must have been crying. She looked crazy. It didn’t matter.
Elphaba was alive.

“In 1997, psychologist Arthur Aron conducted an experiment to see if strangers could fall in love. Single volunteers were arranged into pairs. They were asked to work through 36 questions and then stare into each other’s eyes for four minutes. Aron’s experiment worked. Six months later two of his participants were married.”
It’s Mercedes who convinces her to sign up for the research project, some revision of an old psychology experiment from the nineties.
In the end, Santana only does it so she can shut Mercedes up, and because she could use the money. She doesn’t really expect anything to come of it, which is probably why it works out like it does.
