    Summary

“It’s not—” Aziraphale hesitates. “There is, after all, precedent. The – the sacredness of, of slaughter. Lambs, and such. And – and the notion of bounty.” He waves a heavy arm. “The symbolism, therein.”

“Oh, sure.” Crowley nods, and his curly beard moves with him. “The symbolism therein.” Along the ground, his leg is bare where his robe falls away.

    Summary

Stede finds the house. When he comes back to their room at the inn, he won’t rest—won’t let Ed rest—until Ed’s seen it. His eyes are bright in that way that makes Ed’s guts feel scooped out with a spoon. So Ed hurries into his boots and goes with him.

The once-white paint is stripped by weather and wear, a portion of the roof is caved in, and the spokes of the wraparound porch are all gnawed through by animals.

Ed gazes up at the broken windows and the birds that have built nests there. At his side, Stede is waiting, rocking back and forth on his heels.

    "It’s perfect," says Ed.

    ***

Or: Ed and Stede leave the island together, and they don’t look back.

    Summary

There's something about the care Aziraphale takes with his books. The way he treasures them, loves them...

... and also, perhaps more relevant to Crowley's reaction, the way he fondles them. Strokes their covers. Spreads their pages open with a sure hand, runs his fingers down the split at the center. Traces the letters debossed into leather covers, or teases at the stitching with a fingertip, the light of rapture in his face...

Crowley has spent a lot of time imagining what it might be like to be one of Aziraphale's books. Aziraphale is happy to give him the chance to find out.

Crowley confesses early, and Crowley confesses often. Aziraphale never knows quite what to say.

    Summary

The demon raises an eyebrow in an unnaturally perfect arch. "Not really my purview, is it, confession?"

"You'll think it's funny. Well, you might." The corners of his mouth turn up, nervously, though there's that look in his eyes - a combination of warmth and weight that tugged at Crowley even before he knew what it meant. He's still not sure what to do with it, even after all this time.

"Angel," he begins, "you don't have to-"

"For the longest time, you see, I worried it was a - I think it's called a long game."

Aziraphale doesn't feel guilty, for once, but has some things to confess.

Crowley doesn't think he has guilt, and doesn't plan to confess anything. On both counts, he's wrong.
