“Oh, I don’t know who he really is—no one does,” she says. “Although, some people think he’s probably a grad student doing some avant-garde project for a thesis or something. Others think the whole account is just an elaborate advertisement for Budweiser.”
Arthur doesn’t understand most of what she just said but nods anyway.
Squinting her eyes, she gauges his confusion regardlessly. “It’s someone pretending to be the famous sorcerer. See here, this is his most recent tweet.” At Arthur’s odd look, she clarifies, “It’s like a message that everyone can see.”
@asorcerersays: Guys why did he have to be so hot and like,,,funny? Like it’s been forever and I still miss him. He was pretty dumb though.
Arthur knows his face must look disgusted. “For everyone to see?”
Or, Immortal!Merlin goes on Twitter to complain about his dead king. Unrelatedly, Arthur joins Twitter.

And he thinks about the people he left behind in Camelot, the people who had to live without him. And for the first time, he wonders what they would want for him, what they would have him choose. And the answer is so clear he feels stupid for not seeing it all this time.
They would want him to be happy. If they, somehow, got to live again, got to find family and friendship and love, then they would want him to take it.
No, they would want him to chase it.

Golden. Like the marigolds his mother loved best. Marigolds are the flowers Merlin had insisted on bringing to Ygraine’s grave the one time he came, except his had been the most yellow ones he could find. It would make her look happy, Merlin had said when Arthur fought him on it.
Merlin seems to be getting everything right.

Imagining this hardened, brooding man as a child isn’t an easy task. Did he already have a perpetual frown back then or was he a smiley kid? What was his life like? What were his dreams made of when he closed his eyes?

_____
She understands Ephraim now. She understands wanting the quiet, mundane life in the Rim. And it breaks her heart knowing that Cassian understands, too. Some must fight so all can be free, as they say. Nothing has ever been fair in this galaxy.

Bookmarker's Notes
Cait turns her face away, looking toward the window. She sounds exhausted when she says, “I’ve made too many mistakes.” There is a bitterness to her voice, and Jayce is struck by the realization that, at some point, he must have turned his back for just a moment and Cait had grown away from him. Older, more mature, more burdened. He has missed it happening.
_____
Jayce feels transparent; he fears how much Cait can see on his face -- the lack of sleep, the small losses of time, the moments when his thoughts pop off their track like a needle skipping a line on a record. He knows he isn’t what he used to be; he doesn’t know how to be what he used to be. He’s not convinced that sleep will fix him.
_____
“I have to save you,” Jayce says. There is no other truth but that one. “Because-“
Because he has made too many mistakes. Because he has hurt too many people. Because he used the Hexcore when Viktor asked him not to. Because he shot Viktor. Because he tried to be with Viktor there, at the end, and he didn’t even manage to die right.
_____
Jayce covers his face again. He can’t bear Vi’s words, he wishes she had never spoken at all, because in her face and words is the ugly truth: that Jayce doesn’t hate Viktor, that he doesn’t care what Viktor has done, that Jayce faces a future in which he will never be able to move on, will never forgive himself, and will never, no matter the amount of time passed, stop missing Viktor, even long after he is dead.
_____
Jayce looks out at Piltover, at the place he’s called home for so long. The place that gave him his career, that made his dreams come true, that gave him a safe place and the people he loves. But he looks back at Viktor, at his wry smile and sad eyes, and feels no hesitation at all.

Bookmarker's Notes
Jayce doesn’t know what to do with this massive hole in his chest. Viktor looks better, is acting better, but now Jayce feels like the one with cement in his shoes. Blanketed by such overwhelming self-loathing, he can’t even look him in the eye.
He would have given him the heart out of his chest. Would love him until there was nothing left of himself. But it’s too late for that now. Viktor took the part of him that he wanted. Jayce is a fool.
