Summary
Will needs a date to his mom's wedding. Mike volunteers.
“I have an idea,” says Mike.
Ice cubes form in Will’s stomach. “How dangerous is it? Like, should I call Dustin to talk you down, or should I call Nancy to be ready to drive us to the hospital?”
“No,” says Mike, “you can’t tell anyone or it won’t work.”
“Or what won’t work?” Will asks. It’s like picking up a rock you know a spider will be under.
Mike gets up and closes Will’s door. Hopper doesn’t make them keep it open but sometimes Will does anyway, because every now and then lying around alone with Mike on his bed just makes his chest ache too much. If the door is open he can tell himself You can’t do anything right now, someone will see.
Mike leans back against the door. His eyes are lit up with that special maniacal gleam that the Wheelers get right before they do something insane, like when Nancy says, “Then we have to go kill Vecna ourselves,” or whatever. “Take me to the wedding,” says Mike.
“Yeah,” says Will slowly, “you’ll be at the wedding. Obviously.”

Summary
“Well, it was nice meeting you two,” David said. He leaned forward towards Will, and gave him a single, light pat on his head.
“And I’ll see you around,” he said softly.
Will blinked up at him in a daze, eyes wide and cheeks gaining a tint of pink again.
Mike stared, stunned. Did he just touch Will’s hair? Mike was the only one that ever did that!
Mike's semester takes a serious turn when—
A) He realizes he's in love with his best friend

Summary
Mike recalls the brief interaction he had this morning in the hallway for perhaps the hundredth time. Maybe his friends can help. Help with what exactly, Mike doesn’t know— but something has been bugging him and he needs to get to the bottom of it.
“Hey, do you guys know that kid that wears all black? Chain belt? Eyeliner?”
“The gay kid?” Dustin supplies.
Oh, that’s right. Mike knew he had heard about him somewhere. He’s kind of famous around school. Well, him and his boyfriend. Even with it being 2006, they’re still the only openly gay people at the school.
Mike nods. “Yeah, I guess. I ran into him this morning. Literally, like we collided.”

Mike has a run-in with Will Byers, the school’s so-called “gay kid”. He takes it upon himself to befriend him, and quickly learns about Will’s relationship troubles with his boyfriend Matt. Along the way, Mike struggles with his identity, and Will struggles with his self-worth.

Summary
Oh. Right. The boy. The boy who, by now, has noticed Mike, and Mike looks up just in time to see him pop into his field of vision, a curious look on his face.
"Are you okay?" he asks, peering down at Mike, then glancing up at the fence, then looking down at him again with obvious amusement. "That was quite a drop."
Okay. So maybe Mike is dead, after all. "Um," he says intelligently, flushing pink and following the boy's gaze to the fence, "Yeah, I- I'm fine."
The boy's smirk widens, and he nods slowly, extending a hand. "You live up there?" he asks, nodding to the house above them, and Mike nods as he cautiously accepts the hand being offered. "And you just, what, make a habit of falling onto other people's property?"
"Well, I wouldn't say that," Mike huffs, regaining some of his brain power, and the boy grins widely and gives his arm a sharp tug, pulling him to his feet in one swift motion. Mike stumbles, nearly falling over again, and the boy catches him with a steadying hand on his shoulder.
mike falls off of a fence, learns about signs from the universe, and meets a boy. not necessarily in that order.

Summary
Against better judgment, Will knew he wanted to know more. Wanted to know what was making Mike tick. So he moved steadfast, making his way back to Mike. Will taps Mike on the shoulder and he turns around. There’s already a smile on Mike’s face and Will wants to know why. Mike was an enigma, and Will wasn’t sure if he was someone to be solved, but he wanted to try. In one fell swoop, Will asks, “Can I paint you?”

In his Junior year of high school, Will Byers has found solace in the biographies he reads and the portraits he creates. He has accepted the fact that his life is not at all interesting like those of the famous people he reads about, nor is he worthy of capturing his own likeness in a self portrait. Will has resigned himself to being an ordinary wallflower that moves through life without a strong opinion of what he wants. When Mike Wheeler takes invested interest in him, Will wants to shoot it down, shocked that he can grab someone's attention so much. But as he grows closer to Mike, Will discovers that Mike's inclination to think of him as a superstar isn't a farfetched idea, nor is it farfetched to think of Mike in the same way.
