“I’m George,” the guy – George – says, not offering a hand. “Nice weather out here, don’t know how you race like this.”
Max is busy staring at the pearly whites blinding him. There’s no way this guy hasn’t had work done. Lips like those, plump and pouty, would probably burst if Max bit on them. The paddock has become a cesspool of influencers and celebrities since Netflix came in with their cameras, but it still rubs Max the wrong way, how they prance around knowing nothing about racing and offering their inane opinions.
“It’s fine,” he dismisses, gripping the ball. “I’m good at what I do.”
“I’m sure you are,” George says, flashing another cookie-cutter smile. “Good luck on Sunday, then.”

He thinks about making coffee first thing in the morning, thinks about how the good cups he has at home would perfectly fit between the palms of the other’s hands, how he could probably make Charles rise with the smell of freshly baked bread alone. Thinks about how he wouldn’t mind the age difference between the two of them, as long as it would mean that he could see Charles sitting as casually as he is right now in his private kitchen.
How he’d always make sure to keep dark chocolate in the apartment, because he knows it’s Charles’ favourite, and how Charles is his favourite thing in this entire world.

But fate clearly has a funny way of throwing these two together over and over again.
