Summary
It’s not until later Tuesday night, when April falls exhausted into bed with only four hours left until school starts, that she realizes this is the first election night in a dozen years where she hasn’t been scared of her father. She falls asleep without even looking at her phone.
Then she wakes up.
Last night, she had purposefully avoided looking at any national or statewide results. There was something insular and safe about being in that backyard, surrounded by a specific bubble of joy that April didn’t want to break with any outside information.
April checks her news alerts, and breaks it.

“Besides,” April says, lowering her voice to a whisper, seemingly ignoring how Sterling is deeply unwell, “Twelfth Night has a delightful amount of lesbian subtext. It can be fully viewed as Olivia realizing why the only man she ever loved was not, in fact, a man, and what that implies about the constrictions of the era-”
“I love you.”
April’s eyebrows shoot to her forehead. Sterling could die. Maybe she will. Maybe the linoleum floor will swallow her up right now. Anything would be preferable to accidentally blurting out that she loves (loves?!) someone who she spent a week making out with over a year ago, and has only been on speaking terms with for the past two weeks.

Summary
“You’re impossible,” April says, just a hair softer than before, but enough for Sterling to notice.
Then she’s turning around and jogging away, and Sterling notices the way her t-shirt rides up her lower back, the winter sunlight striking the inch of exposed skin rebelliously peeking through. Sterling swallows, watching the way the muscles in April's thighs tense and release with each purposeful step, and almost falls over again.
“Blair,” she hisses, once they’re finally released from gym class, “something crazy just happened, for the first time in months, since everything, I was… horny again.”
If Sterling’s not mistaken, something like a tear forms in Blair’s eye, before she’s crushing Sterling in a hug.
“I’ve never been more proud of you.”

April turns her attention back to the debate to distract herself from the way the sound of Sterling's laugh sets her blood on fire.
“Do you think any of these imbeciles even know how to craft a comprehensive piece of legislation?”
Sterling rolls her eyes. “Call me when you’re elected to congress, then.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
“Ooh, can’t wait.”
April knows that Sterling is being sarcastic, but there’s a shine in her eyes and her mouth is still frustratingly smiling and God, April wants.
