Thus, the offer extended to him by the Lan court. Take his place as the Emperor’s consort, the only one permitted to lay hands upon the Emperor, the only one to share his bed with him while he sleeps, unaware and vulnerable. His last, best line of defense.

AU - no cultivation palace drama. Magnificent in its span and delightful in its attention to the small details. Completely immersive. Wangxian are infinitely sexy and intelligent in turn as they work together. They take no time at all to fall for each other after Emperor LWJ is (arrange) married to WWX - LWJ’s initial wariness and high walls falling slowly then very quickly to romantic and sexual besottedness and trust. Political intrigue and relationship restoration. This is so so good. Can’t ask for anything more.

Summary
Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Patriarch, demonic cultivator and perpetrator of the massacre at Qiongqi Way, destroys the Stygian Tiger Amulet three days after his nephew’s one-month ceremony.
His family's safety has been assured: Jiang Cheng is in command of Lotus Pier, Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan, and Jin Ling are ensconced in Koi Tower. The Wen Remnants will be secluded and guarded in the Cloud Recesses, where Wei Wuxian trusts Lan Wangji to look after them, even when Lan Qiren disapproves.
Wei Wuxian destroys the amulet before negotiations over his own life start, which may, in retrospect, have been foolishly shortsighted.

In which Wei Wuxian survives a negotiated cease-fire, the Yin Iron is destroyed, and being alive when you expected to be dead is much harder than anyone expected.

This is cry on the train good angst. A diminished depleted depressed WWX shrinks his existence down to a room in the Unclean Realm for years as agreed punishment after QQP (JZX lives) and is slowly coaxed back to life by NHS. Hopeful ending in tandem with its also excellent predecessor story charting JGY’s return from the dark side courtesy of four niblings’ affections and JYL’s battle to recognise him.

In the macro, what if WRH and his line were killed before doing any damage? In the micro, what if NHS opened WWX’s eyes to his behaviour towards LWJ being not quite you know… straight? And what if LWJ went to a discussion conference with WWX determined not to be so hostile? Well then that’s what we call a happy ending!

WWX in YLLZ mode marries LWJ to prove that he isn’t worthy of LWj’s love (he hears the cave confession - and obviously survives its aftermath). He PUNISHES LWJ mercilessly for the love and the whole time LWJ is just barely bearing his whip wounds (WWX unaware). Goes too far and LWJ is seriously hurt and then it’s time for WWX to suffer for and make up for his meanness. More grovelling would have been nice but it’s a pretty potent mix of angst and comfort.

(Eventually he'll realize he got distracted from his mission of mischief by falling in love. Worth it.)

Read this delightful wish fulfilment with a tea kettle whistling in my chest and imaginary feet kicking in the air. These boys are just so gorgeous! They do everything right after accidentally tying the knot in the Cold Pond Cave to formalise their engagement and fall in love: think about what they like about this person, think about whether this person likes them, think about what this person likes and is like and then act on those thoughts.
