Joel sighs, runs his hand wearily over his face. “Baby,” he says, and despite herself, Ellie feels her shoulders relax at the nickname. “This - it’s a threat against all of us. It’s not something we can let lie.”
“I’m not telling you to just let it lie,” Ellie retorts. “Just- why does it have to be you?”
Joel looks away, shifts on his feet. “Ellie,” he says, and the timbre of his voice rakes a claw down her spine. “You know why.”
She does, and that’s the thing- she’s not sure she’s worth it, this kind of love that goes blind with rage in the face of threats, the kind of love that drives people out of their homes and into the night and away from their families. The kind of love that demands sacrifice. It sits uneasily beneath her skin, like an electric current.

Summary
Around the Utah border, she realizes she misses herself.
The Old Ellie would have made a joke about the rock on the side of the road. The Old Ellie would be replying to Joel’s attempts at conversation with something other than a nod or an “uh huh”. The Old Ellie would be braver than she is, never stepping out too far and never wanting to take the path that seems harder. She feels like she forgot to drag her out of that burning building, neglected to save her too.
Joel looks at her like she’s still in there, like it’s just lurking underneath.

One day when Ellie was eight or nine, back at FEDRA, her civics instructor had hauled in an enormous, boxy TV on a cart and set it up at the front of the class. It had taken nearly five minutes to get it working—with “working” meaning playing a low-quality video of the Boston QZ’s first public executions—and Ellie remembers sitting there, staring at the gray screen, her ears filled with the buzz of static.

When she’s about three days from her sixteenth birthday, she digs into the bathroom cabinet in a manic episode of terror and self-hatred that ends abruptly with chemicals burning into her arm and Joel bellowing for Tommy in a panic as the powder eats through her skin. After the Incident, as the adults call it, Ellie is marched down to therapy thrice a week. All day Joel hovers, and at night he sits against the wall outside her room as if she’s going to call out to to him for help or maybe bash her head into a wall. Like she has the fucking energy for that.
Joel’s afraid Ellie’s going to kill herself, and she can’t tell him for sure that she won’t.
