Summary
The first thing Shouyou sees as he walks outside with the team (with his team) is the familiar sight of the bus, bringing a smile to his face as he glances at Tooru, his boyfriend- the second thing he sees makes his smile drop and the ground beneath him turn to ashes.
Shouyou stops.
This wasn’t supposed to happen, he thinks, numb even as the anxiety in his stomach skyrockets and vomit climbs up his throat like poison and like acid, burning and burning-
Shouyou stares at his mother and all he can think is, oh, this wasn’t supposed to happen.

Summary
Kenma wakes up at 3:33 PM- although in all honesty, it could’ve been 3:00 AM or 11:00 PM and he doesn’t think it would’ve made a single difference to him.
Time droops by like a thick sludge, sinking into his lungs with each breath he takes growing heavier and heavier until all he can think is ah, it’s time to sleep again, isn’t it?
Nothing is fun anymore.
But Shouyou is different.
Shouyou is-
Perfect.

Summary
When Shouyou was ten years old, he saw his mother fall apart.
Life had never been easy at home before his father had disappeared at age eight. But after he left, things were hard- well, harder.
It took four years for his mother to snap under the pressure- four years for her to grow more and more distant as the years passed, working as many jobs as she could possibly juggle with as little sleep as she could manage.
(It only took four years for Shouyou to ruin everything.)

Summary
Shouyou's first day of high school is far more terrifying than it has any right to be.
He thinks of being able to actually play on a real, powerhouse team for volleyball, rather than one cobbled together from friends and half baked promises of meat buns and helping them practice. Thinks of playing more than one match in all three years of his middle school career- one match that had ended in half an hour and been lost in straight sets.
The thought of being a regular on an actual team is incredible, leaves him breathless and giddy, even as he sits at his polished desk, surrounded by unfamiliar faces who all seem to be familiar, but only with each other.
It doesn’t matter, though.
Friends are nice but volleyball is better.
He’ll make it on Aoba Johsai's team, he has to- and if he doesn’t, well.
He’ll prove his worth a thousand times over if he has to.

The bruises ache.
When Akira walks into Leblanc, slow and careful, each step flashing pain before his eyes, he blinks to see the rest of the Phantom Thieves before him, all with smiles on their faces, painfully carefree.
And something in Akira burns.

Summary
The Phantom Thieves bond over shared trauma, over echoes of themselves they see in each other, as they ache from the intensity of their sympathy and compassion (which adults had never bothered to give) and help each other heal.
