Sam anticipated this. Because there must be a reason Sam quit, why he'd forsake the family business, even when the rest of the family was dead and gone. Wanting to be safe or normal doesn't cut it anymore, not after Hell, and the Cage, and Leviathans.
"A girl?" Dean prods, digging fingers into wounds Sam’s still visibly nursing. Knowing he's hit a pressure point, Dean latches on, unceasing: "Was there a girl?"
For a moment, Sam imagines the truth. The sweet, fleeting satisfaction of bursting that bubble. Imagines if he told his brother: No. There was a boy.

Summary
While out on a hunt, Sam and Dean get pushed through a strange portal and find themselves in a strange unfamiliar city, it's not until they see supergirl herself that they realize this is not their universe, but the one they used to read about in comics as little boys. It's not long until they realize that they're not the only ones from their universe to wound up in this one, and as demons fill the streets of national city the brothers team up with Supergirl and a certain genius friend of hers to fight them off and find a way to return to their world.
