Summary
Kesten Garess was once a noble son of Brevoy — now he is a man without a house. In the Stolen Lands, he clings to duty as Warden and reluctant protector of a baroness whose fire is as dangerous as it is mesmerizing.
Haunted by her fragile ties to her noble family, she hides secrets beneath silk gloves and prayers whispered to the flames. She is an oracle of fire, a young scion of House Orlovsky trying to build a kingdom from nothing but ashes and uncertain alliances.
Yet the same fire that promises rebirth could devour them both. Kesten must decide whether to temper her flames with steel or surrender to a blaze that might consume the last pieces of himself he still calls his own.
At the same time, a relationship (slowly) develops between Teras, an oracle servant of Pharasma whose memories are vague, and Tristian.
Just as the new kingdom searches for its identity, so do the characters, amid curses, monsters, and unhealthy coping mechanisms.
