He thinks to tell his wife – the position she now holds in his life rattles uneasily in his mind, for she was always meant for Brandon – that the boy is his. When he eventually stands before her, in her home, with a babe clutched in his arms same as in her own, something entirely different rolls off his tongue and her once betrothed’s name tumbles out before he can pull it back inside.
Ned is shamed by this lie in the moons that follow, but it settles within him after a time, eases at his conscience when he tells himself Brandon would not admonish him for what he has done for their sister and her boy.
It's not until he sees the way his daughter and nephew look upon one another that the flaw in his choices rears its ugly head. It would have been better if they'd thought themselves brother and sister.
