Winry hugs Al tight enough to almost hurt. A hug that screams that she doesn’t want to let go and that she doesn’t want him to leave. A sentiment that he honestly shares, there’s a part of him that wants to stay, but his brother needs him. Al feels some of the air wheeze out of his body.
It’s that automail engineer grip.
“Don’t worry, Winry.” Al gently pats her back, trying to be reassuring. Hoping that the smile he offers her meets his eyes. “Everything’s gonna be fine.”

What is the point?
He asks himself, drawing yet another useless array into the pages of a notebook that no one else will ever read. He, once upon a time, disguised his research notes as a travel log. There’s no point to that now. He doesn’t bother. Were someone to come across his research, they wouldn’t understand it anyway. Even if they did, there would be no way to apply it.
He draws arrays pointlessly, knowing that he’ll never be able to use them.
He draws them anyway.

Summary
After Trisha Elric passes away from illness, Van Hohenheim does not walk away. Stricken by guilt and determined not to repeat his mistakes, he stays in Resembool to raise Edward and Alphonse. Though grief still hangs heavy in their home, Hohenheim’s presence becomes an anchor for the boys.
Instead of attempting human transmutation, Ed and Al channel their pain into mastering alchemy under Hohenheim’s strict but compassionate guidance. Hohenheim, knowing the truth of the world and the Homunculi, slowly introduces his sons to the deeper, more dangerous aspects of alchemy—preparing them for a coming storm he knows they cannot avoid.
