“What can you do?” he asks finally, hating the desperation that leaks into his voice.
He takes a seat as Deraad begins to talk about treatment options. He lets his gaze settle on Carter, on the stubble that’s shadowing his jaw. The cannula that delivers oxygen to his brain. His colorless cheeks. His vacant expression. It hurts. It physically hurts Peter to see him like this.

Summary
When a gas explosion leaves a Chicago building on the verge of collapse, County General is thrown into chaos. John Carter and Peter Benton ride out with EMS, knowing the structure isn’t stable and that someone is still inside.
Carter goes in anyway.
In the choking dust and shifting debris, a rescue turns into something far worse. Trapped beneath concrete with only a crackling radio and Benton’s voice in his ear, Carter is forced to fight for his patient… and then for himself.
