After Yanqing's consecutive failures to serve the Xianzhou, it's made clear that his place by the General isn't guaranteed at all— he has to fight for his right to stay Lieutenant and to remain by Jing Yuan's side. The cost of failure? Being kicked out from Jing Yuan's home and being demoted to Private: destroying every sacrifice he's made for this role.
To make it worse, there's more behind the competition than meets the eye, and it has to do with the fact that Jing Yuan is given the unfortunate ability to read Yanqing's mind.
OR: Jing Yuan and Yanqing know exactly where they stand with each other, but hope blurs the line.

Yanqing dispels the illusion with a lazy wave of his hand. “Do you remember them?”
Jing Yuan can’t stop his cheeks from pulling a wry smile. “Too well.”
“That must be nice.” Yanqing leans over the bridge rail, but he never seems to fall. Even the one time he almost fell, Yanqing just flipped over and floated back to the edge before he could tumble into the crowds. “I wish I were more like you. I don’t remember anybody.”
“Haha.” Scalegorge is desolate today. It’s always desolate, but Jing Yuan can still see the waves kiss the shore from here, as they’ve always done, year after year. “You don’t want to be anything like me.”
Before Yanqing and Jing Yuan are family, they’re a general and a ghost on a bridge, unable to join the crowds below. Yanqing is a lonely kid with too much to say and no friends to endure him, and Jing Yuan is far too jaded and much too old for this.
…It becomes harder to make that excuse the longer they spend time together.
OR: comets are set alight when they brush by the sun, and there is nobody brighter in the universe than Jing Yuan.
