    Three years ago, Maximilian Veers made the decision to defect to the Rebellion. The Empire had been responsible for the deaths of his wife and his son and he owed them nothing.
    He DID owe his dearest friend something and so, in order to protect Firmus Piett, newly promoted Captain of the Executor, Veers did not tell him anything of his intentions, knowing that Darth Vader could read his mind and see the truth.
    This makes things very awkward indeed when Veers and Princess Leia Organa run into said Captain in unexpected circumstances.
