When she joined the police academy, she knew she would inevitably use it for undercover work, maybe even to hide if she ever became cornered. What she never expected was that she would accidentally become her grumpy T.O.'s feline friend and fall in love with the side of him he never shows at work.

Lucy takes a step back, then pauses. “Do you ever leave before dark?”
His eyes lift to hers, sharp and unreadable. “Usually not.”
“Why not?”
He shrugs. “Fewer interruptions.”
“Right.” She gives a small laugh. “You know, I’m starting to think my joke during the interview wasn’t such a joke. Maybe you are a vampire.”
Tim doesn’t laugh.
For a second, she thinks he didn’t hear. But he had; his eyes flicker, quick, like a warning light.
“I mean,” she adds hastily, “you never eat, you never go outside, you don’t like sunlight—it’s kinda a pattern.”
He holds her gaze for a moment longer, then says simply, “Good night, Lucy.”
She feels heat climb up her neck. “Good night.”
