Wilbur Atlas Soot was a lonely man, being laid off of his job and busking whenever he can for money. He was expected to stay alone for the rest of his life- that was expected. Until Tommy came along.
He didn't expect Tommy to stay for long. Maybe that's just his abandonment issues but to his surprise Tommy did. The more Wilbur hung out around Tommy, the more he didn't want him to go.
He hasn't seen Tommy in a while. He was embracing it, so why did it hurt so much? A quick look at the news made his heart ache, but as long as Tommy was happy then there was no argument.
Or, Wilbur and Tommy are homeless friends who made two promises, one keeping them and the other breaking it. Until you look a bit deeper and realize that both friends broke them.
