"Sarge! What a surprise to see you here," Mitya greeted, scrambling to keep up his usual cheer under that intense stare.
The major didn't say a word. He simply stood in front of Mitya, his imposing frame completely still.
Mitya swallowed hard, letting out a nervous laugh. "Haha, did you come to see Odette and Vodyanitsa's performance too? I'm afraid it just ended, but—"
Valeriy, instead of grabbing Mitya by the collar to drag him back to work, dropped gracefully to one knee right in the middle of the aisle, pulling out a small velvet box from his coat.
"Dmitri," Valeriy said, his tone maintaining its terrifyingly courteous disposition. "Will you marry me?"

Mitya is completely unprepared to be Valeriy's fake husband.

It only took a few days after they faced Death for them to fall into bed with another again.
Valeriy had expected that something inside Mitya would snap. He was the one who wholly remembered the events that transpired; Mitya only mentioned certain details in passing, then never brought them up ("I saw you die."); Mitya avoided the theatre; Mitya's work had shifted direction without warning, even though the scientist was normally stubborn as a mule; he had phases of silence where he would simply stare at Valeriy; and he traced equations on his palms, now, instead of his whiteboard, and would then stop promptly.
