Odysseus considered himself a good man. Not a bleeding heart, of course. He was a warrior of the mind, he wouldn't fall to pity so easily! He'd follow logic and his skilled stratagem. Yet he found himself so weak when face to face with a child. With a child who'd end up dooming him. Looking into the eyes of the mother he found himself weak.
