Summary
The Killing Curse struck twice.
Green light split the graveyard and The-Boy-Who-Lived fell with the spare. For a breathless, suspended second, there was silence. Then, something ancient turned its head.
Death had not been consulted.
When Cedric Diggory’s body inhaled again, it was not with the soul that had left it.
Across the grass, Lord Voldemort smiled because he did not yet understand that he had made a different kind of mistake.

"I do not appreciate my students coming into my classroom last minute and in such a state. Your tie is not optional. A lack of respect towards your appearance translates to a lack of respect towards me, my class, and magic itself. Detention, Mr. Potter."

Second year was four years ago now, but Harry could still easily recall the image of a young student once stuck in a diary. The man he saw now was older (Harry realized he could see just a tad of silver in his mostly dark locks), but clearly one and the same.
Tom Riddle.
Voldemort.

A horcrux did not stop one from aging. Oh it slowed it down, that wasn’t indisputable but if Lord Voldemort wished to live forever, he would need something far more substantial.
Horcruxes alone, he had long since realised, were not perfect. The soul was tethered, yes, but the body still yielded in its slow decay. Rot had no master, only time.

There was something wrong with Harry Potter.
At first, no one noticed. The boy grew as he ought to grow, small and underfed in Privet Drive. But there was something, deeply, off kilter about him. The Dursleys not only locked his cupboard door on a night, but also their bedroom doors as well. Not because of the magic, though they feared that too, but because sometimes the boy watched them at night, eyes glinting in the dark when they forgot about the cupboard....
