Ilya reached into the pocket of his neon tracksuit and pulled out a slightly crumpled $100 bill. He stood up, walked to the center of the room, and slammed it into a gold-rimmed Versace vase that was currently serving as a glorified trash can for Sasha's empty sunflower seed bags.
"A tax," Ilya said, already unwrapping another piece of gum. "Every time the Canadian says something that makes me want to die of boredom, we pay the tax. When the jar is full, we buy him a personality."
Ilya looked at the lone $100 bill sitting at the bottom of the vase. "He still eats Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast," Ilya whispered, his voice trembling. "We are going to need a much bigger vase."
