    Shane: I thought when people did these interviews, they got to like, pick what’s in their bag beforehand. It’s not usually a spontaneous thing, is it?

    Ilya: How would you know this?

    Shane: I watched one that Rose did. 

    Ilya: Oh, of course you watched Rose doing one of these videos. Did she have a framed photo of you in her bag so she could gush about how much you love each other?

    Shane: Do I seriously need to remind you that I chose to marry you, and that we live and work together, and Rose is just my friend I see like twice a year?

    Ilya: Yes. 

    Shane: Are you sure you want to do this with us, Harris? 

    Harris: I can’t help that the people love you. Besides, I’ve convinced myself this will be fun. 

    Shane: That’s not very comforting. 

    Harris: Neither is the look on Ilya’s face that’s telling me I will definitely come to regret this, but that’s the job!

    "What happened?"

    Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.

    "Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."

    He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.

    "Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."

    "And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"

    "That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

    Luca Haas has a meltdown on the ice in the final five minutes of the game.

    Confidence scarred, he throws himself into a summer athlete campaign with the Centaurs to outrun the fear that he’ll never be as skilled, confident, or sexually expressive as Ilya Rozanov was at his age.

    But when “polite” Luca Haas snaps and shocks everyone by starting a fistfight with Filipino-Canadian youth athlete Angelo Perez, summer quickly derails into a dilemma to be seen as mature, living up to the expectations of the team, and these newfound, guilty urges for the very guy he fought on day one.

    Centaur matchmaking. Missing home. A messy summer fling. A mean article. An exploration of what sparks are supposed to feel like. And Ilya catches Luca buying condoms.
