Summary
Wei Wuxian dies during the siege of the Burial Mounds thinking, at the very least, he’s earned some peace.
He’s wrong. His soul doesn’t scatter to the void. No, it’s caught, pinned, and informed – very politely – that this is what happens when you break the rules of the living and the dead in the same lifetime.“You stepped beyond mortal bounds,” he’s told. “You created an abomination that should never have existed...”
And Heaven, apparently, has time to hold a grudge.
So, as punishment: he doesn’t get to rest. Not in this afterlife. His soul becomes bound to resentment itself, condemned to rise again wherever the cry for vengeance is strong enough to drag him back. Whoever they are, whatever they’re suffering, whatever they can’t finish – that’s his problem now.
Strangers’ faces. Strangers’ lives. Strangers’ revenge plots.
He wakes in the middle of all of them, expected to put things right with whatever strength the body has left. And of course he does, because it’s not like saying “no” has ever worked out for him.
Resentment calls.
Wei Wuxian answers.And it doesn’t take long for the living to realize the Yiling Patriarch never actually stayed dead.

Wei Ying had been powerful, smart, and bright. Too powerful, too smart, and too bright, in fact. By the end of his stay in the Cloud Recess, he had started to talk of dark magic. Upon arriving back home after Lan Qiren expelled him, he started to practice it. Shadow work, first, which was unorthodox enough, and then necromancy, forbidden spells. His advancements, findings and approaches had been welcome when the threat of the Wen Coven was at its greatest, but then Coven Leader Wen Ruohan’s magic had turned against himself and another branch of the family had taken over, and Wei Ying's ideas had turned from innovative and interesting to dangerous and threatening.
It had resulted in the breaking of his wand, in his banishment from the Chinese Magical World. And thirteen years after it, he remained away and unreachable, branded as an heretic—Wei Wuxian was the looming shadow of a sibling, and a friend, and a lover, but no more.
