“And sometimes I…” he gestured vaguely toward his own throat, clearly annoyed with the need to explain it out loud. “…do that.” Kaiser looked away first.
“And it's not what you think,” he added quickly.
Kaiser’s eyes flicked back to him, irritation flaring again.
“I didn’t try to kill myself.”
“I mean it,” Kaiser said, sharper now. “That wasn’t the plan.”
He pushed himself off the desk, pacing a step or two across the room like a caged animal before turning back.
“I wasn’t trying to die. I didn’t realize how long I’d—” he cut himself off again.
“Whatever.”
The dismissal was automatic, defensive.
But he still finished the explanation.
“I wasn’t planning on passing out either.”
