Steady glanced at her, but the woman was already holding up her hands, palms out. Around them, a WJ700 was cleaning up from the party, throwing food out. “I know,” Marissa said. “You mean well. Road to hell though, girly. A personal hell.”

When you cut a demon, the spray was cobalt. Deep. Rich. Unmistakably non-human.
But his blood was red. A deep, bruised red that was off-color still, but undeniably not blue.

Summary
It was typical for Steady to have no recollection of dreams nor nightmares when she awoke each morning. A throat restrained by the grip of sleep that hadn’t relented to the waking world yet was far more terrifying than imaginations and anxieties. More real and tangible. Worth remembering. More so than the reasoning for why she’d woken up, a shout rasping from her sleep-paralyzed throat, just the hiss of escaping air with no shrill weight.
Under three layers of blankets, Steady had been baked throughout the night, the weight of them unable to be easily shaken off. No memory of a dream again. Nothing conscious.
But something must have held onto her, like muscles trained to memory or the faded after image of the roasting sun, scorched into retinas with trailing lines of blue.

Leaves drifted down from trees without any set intent or importance. Clouds drifted, borne on winds that held only the thinnest of threats for the wintry chill to come. Joggers, brought out by the cool 68°F weather, passed Markus and Simon by without so much as a glance, their pace sluggish and dragging with every step. Off to the side, between a set of aging maples, two teens were sprawled in a blanket of crinkling shed tree-fire, breathless smiles turned skyward.
It was just another day.
And if that didn’t just burn North into giving the approaching pair a withering look.
