Summary
The year is 1989 and not much has changed in the past few years in Shuhrat Kessikbayev‘s life as an engineer on a smaller soviet military base on the outskirts of Tashkent. Change hadn‘t been a part of his vocabulary for a long time and although there was a part of him that longed for excitement, he had learned to accept his fate of endless dreary office work and he was certain that the arrival of a new colleague from the German Democratic Republic wasn‘t something that would impact his life in any greater way.
Marius Streicher wasn‘t fond of change normally. He liked order and routine. However as his life back in east Germany began to become less pleasant due to unforeseen events, he found himself in need of drastic change. This lead to him accepting a request he never thought he would: A position as an temporary engineer in the Uzbek SSR. Although it was a big step, he was certain he could finally start anew here. Thousands of kilometers in the east, where nothing would be familiar.

Summary
The sniper flinched in surprise and stepped back, hurt crossing his features briefly. "Many of them are good people, Maxim. You are too crass to see that." He sighed and looked away, looking at the blood that clung to his clothes. He remembers slinging an arm around Jäger's shoulders and helping the French medic haul him to the chopper, Montagne's shield covering their left as they moved. He remembers the sound Marius had made, agony mixed with anguish - the final sounds of a dying animal, begging to be put out of its misery.
