Hosea took another drink of his beer next to him, eyes cast across the lake and Arthur followed, watching the early evening insects skit across the surface. Just waiting to be eaten by the swirls of fish flitting through the waters below them.
Hosea broke the silence, “You seem...Happier recently.”
Arthur didn’t know how to respond for a brief moment, so he stumbled over a couple of vowels before Hosea’s laugh was settling him and he said slowly, “I suppose I am? Nothing much though.”
Hosea’s eyes didn’t leave the rhythmic lapping of the lake against the dock, but the way his mouth curled, Arthur knew that he was about to be perhaps a bit too smart.

Arthur knows he and holiness are strangers, so maybe it’s some kind of blasphemy that being here with Charles feels like baptism. Not in any literal sense, of course, ‘cause eventually they will trudge out the river, back to old boots and old habits, and he’ll be the same bad man he’s always been.

Looking taken aback, Charles’ brows pinched together. “Interesting.” He repeated.
Well he can't very well take it back now. “Yeah,” he agreed, “interesting. Quiet, observant…” Arthur murmured about the basics of the man, “but also,” he begins to speak in ways that perhaps indicate Arthur’s observant too - specifically of Charles, “you’re always thinkin’, I can tell. You keep it all up in that head of yours and I wonder what goes on in there.” He went on.
“You’ve had a bit to drink.” Charles assessed.
Arthur chuckled. “Maybe.” He conceded. “But it's true. You got me curious.”
