it should be something simple; skin over skin, winter’s fingers trailing over her throat on the way up to her jaw. somehow, despite everything, loving winter, letting winter touch her, is the simplest thing cinder has ever done. it should be — and here she is, jerking away from her, hissing through her teeth and damn well nearly bursting into flame.
(blood trickling through her fingers; a hand on the top of her head; the smell of her own singed flesh; ice in her throat, drowning, drowning, drowning —)
winter recoils too, mumbling an apology. her eyes are shut; she’s practically asleep already, so cinder (breathing hard, wishing… something) takes her hand and places it on the underside of her jaw, letting her curl herself into her side. the urge to wrench herself out of winter’s grip and run until she can’t anymore doesn’t quite go away until cinder falls asleep.
