Summary
"There was supposed to be blood on the blade. A few dark drops, for dramatic emphasis. But he’d tried to cut Constance. And that had been his mistake. [...] On her face, his little cut gaped darkly, a black rent in a white cheek. It didn’t bleed. Not a drop. Not a gleam. Constance never did."
A bright-dark moment of healing between a shadow sorceress and a fallen aasimar. Two ghost women, survivors of the unsurvivable, and all the wounds and careful healing that entails.

And Joan the human is gone. The light in her eyes makes the sunshine seem dingy. No wonder the fire didn't swallow her, Alençon thinks; she's swallowed it, she drank it in just like she drinks in battle and horses and soldiers and adulation and awe. She is a saint walking, but a bloody saint, and ever since she came riding out of her little backcountry village everything has crumbled before her. She's about to tell him who will crumble next, and he is transfixed, and he knows he will beg to be at her side when it happens.
"A greater work," she says. "One I can't do by myself. I'm going to need help, good help from people I trust. I have La Hire and his men, but they're mercenaries. I need someone of noble blood, someone who knows the courts of Europe. I need you, my duke."
He has already done homage to one liege lord. The King of France. It is treason to swear to another. But Charles never walked through fire; no, Charles has never even led an army or fought in a battle. Charles couldn't stop the English from tramping brazenly about in half of France, taking Alençon's own duchy. It wasn't Charles who punished those who held Alençon prisoner after Agincourt, those who gave him the mocking nickname of the poorest man in France.
And his oath to the king had kept him away from Joan when she needed him.
Alençon is on his knees before Joan says another word, and the shadow of doubt is already burning away.
"I am your man," he swears.

Summary
“I didn’t say I didn’t want to,” Hazel clarified, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m just not trying to.”
PJ turned to look at her, caught off guard by the admission. Hazel’s expression was unreadable, her gaze fixed on the screen as if it were the most important thing in the world.
“You’re missing the movie.”
“I’ve seen Shrek before.”
“It’s Shrek 2—”
“—Whatever. You want to fuck?” PJ asked.
Hazel’s shrug wasn’t a rejection, but it wasn’t the enthusiasm PJ had hoped for. “Fuck me,” PJ muttered under her breath, feeling the weight of the moment settle heavily between them.
“Right now?” Hazel asked, eyebrows raised. “You don’t want to watch Shrek 2?” she gestured at the screen.

Summary
How Hazel Callahan met the loudest, meanest, most annoying girl on the elementary school playground, fell in love, and grew up.
-
In Hazel’s dreams, there was a girl with curly hair who kind of glowed. She leaned over Hazel, caging her in. She had a biting, sneering mouth and these bruising fingers. She was awful and really, really warm.Hazel woke up at three in the morning, foggy, and thought, oh. Okay.

Bookmarker's Notes
I loved the reconstruction of their childhood, it felt very true to their canon characters and relationships just projected backwards. And the progression of the “friendship” and slow realization of feelings was so sad but sweet, I wanted someone to give Hazel a hug through most of it, and the little victories she gets are so endearing. Also the PJ’s overall straps slipping rule of 3 was so fun to see.
PJ was getting red and she was all up in the kid’s face as he stared down at her, bewildered. Josie, that quiet girl who followed PJ around the courtyard, had her face in her hands and her knees nudged together, as if she could make herself invisible by curling small enough. Hazel bit into a carrot.
No one talked to PJ either, if they could help it. No one except Josie. They were best friends, Hazel guessed, whatever that meant, but it looked sort of like a hostage situation sometimes.
When the second-grader finally relented, loping off with his confused-looking friends, PJ straightened up, looking flushed and satisfied with herself. Her thumb slipped absent-mindedly to fix the strap of her overalls. She spun around to face Josie, and her loud mouth opened again.
Hazel shifted in the dirt where she sat. She hadn’t spoken a word all day. Not since “I love you, Mom,” in the car.
