“I do like milk.” He rests his elbows on the counter, a slow smile spreading across his face as he stares across at me.
“Then order a flat white.”
“Not that much milk.” One corner of his lips ticks up in a lopsided smirk.
My eye twitches. “F—” Fuck you, is what I was going to say, but at the last minute I realise he’s still a customer and I need to remain professional…and also I don’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much he irritates me.

Violet is awake and her eyes are filled with fire when I return to our room after visiting Jack-fucking-Barlowe. Fuck. I meant to quietly pack my things and leave before she woke, but it's too late now, and she's obviously guessed my intentions because every word is full of soft fury as she stalks over to me. "I'm going to ask for the same thing I've been asking for years: I need you to listen to me. I need you to trust me and trust our friends so we can figure this out. It's hard to be vulnerable, and you might lose people you care about if you trust them and they reject you. But you sure as hell will lose everyone if you insist on shutting us out of your life."
She grabs the sides of my flight jacket, pulls me into the room, and slams the door. There is nothing I can say to make this better so I anchor my shields as strongly as I ever have and wrap my arms around her, pulling her against my chest.
I can't tell her how terrified I am. It would have been better if I had died because at least then I wouldn't be capable of hurting Violet anymore. Fuck. Sgaeyl hasn't spoken to me since the battle but I know she agrees. Better to be dead than to be this. An abomination.

Summary
ALL THE SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE BOOK.
Violet Sorrengail's world is shattered when she discovers everything she was taught to believe is a lie. Between discovering her brother still alive and the man she fell in love with to be the head of a much larger rebellion, a revolution, she decides to be on the right side of history, the side that defends the weak and fights against the Venin.
Now Violet needs to learn how to navigate Basgiath War College as a second year with stakes higher than ever, protect the ones she loves, and sort out what to do with Xaden Riorson, the man who broke her heart but still very much owns it.
Like everyone else who’s read this book, I’m still suffering from the hangover that came from finishing it. Attempting to work out the hangover by taking a stab at what happens next.
Picks up right after Brennan is revealed to be alive. This fic is intended to run until Iron Flame comes out in November. I own nothing. I’m just here to kill time till November :)

Xaden Riorson thought he had figured out how to survive in this place. Now in his final year at Basgiath War College, he’s risen to the rank of Wingleader. He is focused on one thing: getting every kid of the rebellion bonded to a dragon. Then the real work can begin.
But he hadn’t counted on Violet Sorrengail, the General’s daughter, entering the Rider’s Quadrant. She’s not supposed to be here and she’s about to throw every plan he has made into chaos. Can he trust her? And more importantly, can he trust himself?
This follows the dialogue and events of Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, retold from Xaden’s perspective. This was written prior to the release of Iron Flame, so all theories and speculation are my own and unconfirmed. It's my best guess at exploring how Xaden might have felt throughout the story and features new scenes with Liam, Garrick, Imogen, Sgaeyl and Tairn. Major plot spoilers from the very first chapter.
