Rapid fire thoughts in French pour into his head, each more hysterical sounding than the last. He recognizes “merde”, “putain”, and “pensée” and that’s it. Unhelpful.
“Charles,” he murmurs, slightly apologetic, “French.”
Charles’ eyes get even bigger, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline. He makes a noise that if Max were a slightly less merciful person he would call a squeak. Watching him make the absolutely unhinged connection in real time is fascinating. Then carefully, in tentative English, You are hearing my thoughts?
Miserable, Max nods. Then shrugs. Fuck.
“Max,” Charles practically hisses, his grip on Max’s hand going tighter. The pinprick of his nails feels like the only thing connecting Max to the earth. “What the fuck?”

Or, the year Max turns thirty, he spends about a month mid-season being able to read minds via physical touch. Charles is there too.

“Maybe next week Max will let you win,” Tom jokes.
Charles chuckles a little, but looks even more uncomfortable than he did before.
Max, still riding on his anger from Charles admitting Ferrari are upset with him, raises the microphone.
“That is not funny,” he says, barely restraining himself from unleashing his anger on Tom.
If he doesn’t put a stop to this now, people will always speculate. They will always wonder: did Max let Charles pass? Did Charles go wide on purpose? Are they going easy on each other? Are they sharing team secrets?
“What, you think that because I love him that I would just let him pass by me? You do not know anything about our relationship, and you clearly do not know anything about me if you think that I would do this. If I let anybody win, I would not deserve my seat in F1. This joke is stupid, and it is insulting.”
or: following their very public trackside and podium kisses, Max and Charles deal with the consequences of their coming out. They knew things would be difficult; but they didn't really expect the many, many ways it would change their lives.

Max pointed at Charles’ bags. ‘Is this all you're bringing or will there be more?’
Oh so he was making fun of him now, well Charles could do the same. ‘You mean more than the four white t-shirts you brought?’
Max blinked at him for a couple of seconds before his entire face lit up and he giggled. He giggled.
‘Good one, and I actually brought five t-shirts,’ Max replied, still smiling.
Was he serious? Charles hoped not.
OR: Charles and Max are 'forced' to go on a road trip together, whatever could go wrong?
